- Implant Mucositis and Peri-Implantitis: Investigating microbial shifts around dental implants showing early signs of soft tissue inflammation.
- Post-Treatment Biological Monitoring: Comparing bacterial loads before and several weeks after periodontal therapy to evaluate biological response.

Crucial Clinical Limitations & ADA Guidance

Finding bacterial DNA in a sample simply proves colonization—it does not indicate whether tissues are actively being damaged or whether bone is being lost.
- Host Immune Response: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory breakdown driven by the patient's own immune response to the biofilm, not a simple monomicrobial infection. Two patients with the same bacterial count can have dramatically different clinical conditions.
- Physical Exam Remains the Diagnostic Standard: Physical 6-point periodontal probing depths, bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment levels, and radiographic bone levels on digital X-rays remain the undisputed diagnostic gold standard under the AAP/EFP clinical classifications.
- No Standalone Caries/Periodontal FDA Clearances: As noted by the ADA (October 2023), there are currently no FDA-approved salivary diagnostic tests for independently diagnosing or evaluating the risk of periodontal disease, dental caries, or head and neck cancers.
